Marion Park

Marion Park - [Canberra Australia]

The Marion Park Masterplan was submitted as an expression of interest to support the ACT government’s city centre renewal plan, involving the redevelopment of an almost 2-hectare site in the City Hill precinct of Canberra. The Marion Park Masterplan stands as an inspiring blueprint demonstrating environmental stewardship and architectural innovation.

Marion Park, a groundbreaking mixed-use development, is set to redefine urban living in the heart of Canberra. Drawing inspiration from the iconic design principles of Walter Burley and Marion Mahoney Griffin, the Marion Park masterplan celebrates the indigenous landscape of Ngunnawal country, blending architectural innovation with environmental stewardship.

Rooted in the geographic elements that shaped Canberra’s design, Marion Park pays homage to the natural beauty of Ngunnawal country. Each building within the masterplan embodies an organic topographical form, mirroring the rolling hillsides of the local landscape. Knowles Place, envisioned as an urban park, echoes the tranquility of Lake Burley Griffin and the Molonglo River as they meander through the Parliamentary Triangle.

Marion Park is more than a development; it’s an architectural landmark designed to set new standards in sustainability and livability. Offering diverse housing options, including affordable units, the masterplan prioritizes environmental, social, and governance standards. Innovative Passiv Haus principles and onsite renewable energy generation pave the way for a Net Zero future, ensuring economic viability and environmental responsibility.

At the core of Marion Park’s ethos is a commitment to sustainability. Through passive design principles, intelligent occupant sensing controls, and responsible water management, the development aims for Net Zero operation and a Nathers 7-star rating. By integrating sustainability into every aspect of design, construction, and operation, Marion Park supports climate resilience and the City Renewal Authority’s sustainability goals.

Comprising five buildings with approximately 456 residential units, Marion Park offers a diverse range of housing typologies tailored to meet the needs of individuals, partners, and families across generations. The architectural design features two corner elliptical buildings, each soaring 17 stories high, and three mid-rise structures with seven levels. The development includes food and beverage outlets, commercial and retail spaces, and a community center, fostering a vibrant live-work-play environment. Emphasizing pedestrian-friendly urban living, the ground floor hosts a mix of establishments, encouraging walkability and social engagement. Complementary amenities include a grocery or small-scale supermarket, fast and slow food outlets, healthcare facilities, and other services to the community. Each building incorporates communal spaces that residents can book for shared use, promoting connectivity and community spirit.

Marion Park represents a vision for the future—a harmonious blend of nature, innovation, and community.
