272 Hedges Avenue Pedestal
272 Hedges Avenue Pedestal
Contreras Earl Architecture was appointed by leading Australian property developer Sunland Group to design the two-storey pedestal base including interior and communal areas for the ‘272 Hedges Avenue tower’ in Mermaid Beach, Gold Coast, Australia. From its exceptional location in Mermaid Beach, 272 Hedges Avenue presents an unfolding experience of architectural elegance and unparalleled amenity. Rising 44 storeys above its beachside setting the residential tower marks a point of transition for the coast’s urban form, marking the southern boundary of the high-density zone. Inspired by patterns created by wind and water on rocks and sand, the Pedestal design brings a human scale to the project creating an exquisite sculptural connection with the surrounding streetscape and parklands.
The progression from outside to inside is fluid and seamless – a unique spatial experience for residents and visitors alike. The subtle curving exterior façade resembles the crests and erosion effect of wind on sand while its interior creates the allusion of a rock cave naturally eroded by the ocean. Upon arrival residents are greeted by a grand foyer of sweeping voids and illuminated arches. The seamless flow from one space to another enhanced by artistic lighting that subtly follows the ridgelines of the geometry illuminating the journey to the lift lobby, a privately enclosed space within the suspended arcs. The distinctive semi reflective stainless-steel façade creates a transition to the interior arch‐vault ceilings in concrete finish which will have the appearance of carved solid rock.
Inspired by the natural forces in play at the project’s coastal location the project acknowledges the most extraordinary sculptor of all- the ocean. The refined sculptural detailing is evident throughout the interior as well, translated into the building details, such as the beautifully detailed stainless-steel concierge desk. The ground floor private amenities include a resident lounge, boardroom, and function room. The non-directional grinded Stainless-Steel finish on the exterior pedestal facade subtly reflects the streetscape and lush surroundings. The seamless progression of spaces is also evident in the transition of the experiential qualities from the ground floor to the first floor amenity level above. On this level a private pool and spa area sit beneath a vaulted ceiling and the space opens out onto an outdoor garden terrace overlooking the seaside parklands. The unsurpassed offerings of the resident amenities include a 15 metre heated pool, spa, gym, sauna, hammam steam room, and treatment rooms. The Resident’s Amenity programmes cater to the senses and the minimalist spaces are curated not only with the practicalities of the programme in mind but to create spatial sequences and atmospheric experiences that will have a profound effect on the user. Visitors to the unique soothing spaces are immersed in multiple sensory ways.
